Despite being based on the memoirs of celebrity chef Nigel Slater, this light-hearted BBC production is never really all that believable, which isn’t to say that it isn’t enjoyable, in parts at least, with Bonham Carter’s against-type turn being particularly amusing; but the crux of the narrative – a son’s culinary battle with his stepmother for the love of his father – crucially fails to convince.
