Accompanied by Jóhannsson’s mournful brass and cathedral organ score, made-up entirely – but for a bookending contemporary helicopter shot – of archive footage (from the likes of Mitchel and Kenyon at the turn of the century to miners-shot footage of police brutality during the 1984 strike) Morrison’s elegiac cinepoem elegantly paints a portrait of coalminers and coalmining in the northeast of England during the 20th century.
