Based on the memoirs of André Devigny, Bresson’s engrossingly understated and largely (but for the odd burst of Mozart) beautifully low-key film follows the escape attempt of an imprisoned terrorist/resistance fighter at Fort Montluc, Lyon, in Nazi-occupied France in 1943, detailing from beginning to end his numerous feats of ingenuity and daring.
