A drifting chancer takes a job as a mechanic at a roadside diner after taking a shine to the Greek proprietor’s comely wife, whom he subsequently begins a torrid, sweaty affair with; subsequently, when their feelings begin to match their hormones, they decide to pursue extreme measures in order to stay together, in Rafelson’s much (and unfairly) maligned version of James M. Cain’s much filmed novel, which features a pair of excellent performances from Nicholson and Lange and some fine photography from Nykvist, but is let down somewhat by Small’s distracting score.
