Nella Last, a Barrow-in-Furness housewife, finds that the onset of the Second World War allows her to get from under the shadow of her controlling, over-protective husband, as ‘doing her bit’ enables her to get out of the house and meet people, and as she does she manages to leave her previous emotional problems far behind her, in this well acted, beautifully crafted, and gently moving adaptation of Last’s diaries.
