A lonely, bullied 12-year-old boy from a broken home, whose mother drinks herself to sleep every night, falls for the girl next door, an enigmatic creature who turns out to be a vampire, in this affecting, sensual, and beautifully acted film, which – as with Tomas Alfredson’s version, which this perhaps slightly improves upon – is let down somewhat by an occasionally distracting score that jars with its otherwise agreeably restrained aesthetic.
