A young girl with a shock of red hair, brought up by her fanatical Pentecostal adoptive mother in a sleepy Lancashire town, struggles to find her own way in life – that of a young lesbian – against the repressive nature of her surroundings, in this gently humorous though occasionally harrowing BBC drama, which benefits greatly from some strong performances, though the editing sometimes jars.
