A middle-aged associate professor and his wife, at the behest of her father the president of the college, invite the new twenty eight-year-old biology professor and his wife back to their house for post-party drinks; but copious amounts of alcohol, decades of bitterness and resentment, and a 02:30 start time do not make for a pleasant evening, in Nichols’s scabrous, painfully visceral film, a gorgeously shot and bravely performed adaptation of Albee’s acclaimed play.
