A middle-aged alcoholic country singer (Bridges, outstanding), whilst wandering from one booze-soaked small town gig to the next, meets and falls for a beautiful young journalist and her 4-year-old son, but struggles to leave behind his self-destructive ways, in Cooper’s affecting and generally credible feeling adaptation of Cobb’s novel, which runs out of steam a little towards the end.
