A Missouri farmer, who joined a band of Confederate guerrillas after the murder of his wife and child at the hands of marauding Red Legs, refuses to surrender at the end of The American Civil War, becoming a much wanted fugitive; but gradually he finds his humanity returning to him, as he picks up various waifs and strays along the way, in Eastwood’s very violent and surprisingly humorous western, which is never any less than thoroughly entertaining.
